Outdated Wireless Radiation Standards - Calls For Immediate Moratorium on 5G

In 2019, The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) investigated the levels of radiation emitted by cell phones. This all happened after The Chicago Tribune conducted tests to measure the levels of RF radiation emitted from popular kinds of cellphones. The results they encountered were astonishing, and as a result, a class action lawsuit began. The parties involved included Apple and Samsung—two of the biggest cell phone manufacturers.

In 2021, the Environmental Health Trust, a scientific nonprofit that has worked on wireless radiation and health, won in a court and ordered the FCC to explain why it ignored scientific evidence showing harm from wireless radiation. The court claimed that the FCC failed to respond to “record evidence that exposure to RF radiation at levels below the Commission’s current limits may cause negative health effects unrelated to cancer.”

Since then, there has been a promising new development by some of the world’s top environmental scientists calling for an independent review of outdated wireless radiation standards. Dr. Devra Davis, the President of the EHT, has been an advocate for ensuring the FCC is held accountable for revamping these outdated standards. So, what does that mean for cell phone users and their health now?

RF Radiation and Wireless Phones

The WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) based on an increased risk for glioma, which is a malignant type of brain cancer that is associated with wireless phone use.

In the last few decades, we’ve become increasingly reliant on wireless devices, to the point where we feel lost without them. Unfortunately, most of us have no idea how much radiation these devices give off—or worse, what adverse side effects could be caused by prolonged exposure to this type of radiation including cardiomyopathy, carcinogenicity, DNA damage, neurological effects, increased permeability of the blood brain barrier, and sperm damage. It is important that the public is fully aware of the health effects of wireless radiation from our cell phones.

New Peer-Reviewed Paper Presents Scientific Case For Revision of Limits

On October 17, 2022, the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF) published an article in the journal Environmental Health. In this article, they challenge the safety of current wireless exposure limits to radiofrequency radiation (RFR).  The paper titled, “Scientific evidence invalidates health assumptions underlying the FCC and ICNIRP exposure limit determinations for radiofrequency radiation: implications for 5G” argues that the FCC and ICNIRP (the International Commission on Nonionizing Radiation Protection), have made invalid claims based on their behavioral studies conducted in the 1980s.

Furthermore, the exposure limits from the late 1990s were also based on two major assumptions: 1) any biological effects were due to excessive tissue heating, and 2) no effects would occur below the putative threshold SAR. There were twelve other additional assumptions that were not specified by either the FCC or ICNIRP.

What Happens Now?

Our dependency on our Wireless Devices is inevitable. We are subjecting ourselves to RF radiation from these devices every day knowing that the FCC has yet to update their exposure limits to the public. These limits must be based on scientific evidence rather than on erroneous assumptions, especially given the increasing worldwide exposure of people and the environment to RFR (which includes 5G technology).

As cell phone users, there are ways to mitigate our exposure to RFR.

One can minimize exposure to RF radiation by limiting your phone time and using cases and sleeves that block such radiation. SafeSleeve offers anti-radiation cases for your wireless devices.

They’re designed to block up to 99% of RF radiation and protect your phone from cracking, dinging, and scratching with high impact resistant, Military-Grade (Mil-Std 810G) cases, developed with your comfort in mind.
